New report on growing local food around urban areas in the UK

The Making Local Food Work project has recently released a new report: Food from the urban fringe – Issues and opportunities for making local food work.

Its purpose was to investigate the current barriers and opportunities for smaller-scale food production on land around urban areas – very relevant stuff for Leicester!

Making Local Food Work is an initiative funded by the Big Lottery Fund to support community enterprise approaches to connecting land and people through food. It also aims to better understand the issues threatening the future resilience and viability of the community food sector.

Are you interested in getting involved in the planning for Green Light 2013? Would you like to hear a bit about where the festival came from and our ideas for the future? If so, you are warmly invited to join us for an open meeting on Wednesday 9th May, 6-8pm.

PARKING THE CAR…FOR GOOD!

A journey by bicycle exposing the dark side of our obsession with cars and investigating better ways of living and getting around.

Radical cycling collective Bicycology will be doing a whistlestop tour of the Midlands. With no motorised support, the group will bring their roadshow to four major cities, showing pedal-powered films, bringing together the community, provoking discussions, and reclaiming space from cars with Bicycology’s unique brand of creativity and educational direct action.

The tour aims to point out that the dominance of the car is neither inevitable nor desirable. The dark side of car culture is huge yet largely out of mind:- from obesity to lung disease, climate change to strip mining, and 3 million lives tragically cut short globally every year, largely the young and the poor.

Why do we accept private motor cars when we know they make no sense in the long term? How has our society become so entwined and dependent on car culture? What steps can we take to begin real changes and to free ourselves from this deadly embrace?

Join Bicycology at one of our events and help us map out and realise a safer, cleaner, healthier, saner future.

20th May – Plant Sale at the EcoHouse

The EcoHouse’s renowned annual plant sale is taking place on Sunday 20th May 2pm -4pm. Come early not to miss out on our organically grown veg, herb and flower plants, all in peat-free compost!

This is the EcoHouse’s biggest annual event, attended by hundreds of people every year. The EcoHouse is located next to Western Park on Hinckley Road, Leicester.
