History

Transition Leicester was formed in late 2007 and became the 45th official Transition Initiative in March 2008. Below is a short summary of what Transition Leicester has done since that time…

2011

  • Green Light festival takes place for the first time, attracting close to 1000 attendees
  • The first ever accredited Permaculture Design Course takes place in Leicester
  • Community Harvest Whetstone expands its growing area and increases its membership to 25 cropsharers

2010

  • Launch of the Footpaths Carbon Reduction Groups programme
  • Several training sessions are organised: Non Violent Communication, Consensus Decision Making and more
  • Monthly Transition Cafes take place in Bishop St Methodist Church Hall, featuring food, short talks and craft activities

2009

  • Transition Leicester wins the Green Life award for its awareness raising activities over the previous year
  • The first Transition Leicester Apple Day is a big success, combining talks, games and a lot of apple juice pressing
  • “Be-spoked!” takes place – a bike ride and poster exhibition to showcase practical bikes for short journeys
  • Open Eco Houses – two weekends of inspiring low energy eco homes in the Leicester area are open to the public
  • Several other events, including a Work That Reconnects weekend workshop and a showing of Power of Community

2008

  • Three major events take place to launch Transition Leicester, including a talk by Peak Oil expert Richard Heinberg
  • Launch of the Food Group and two food-themed events – a harvest celebration and a talk on Community Supported Agriculture
  • Transition Leicester’s response to the consultation on the Ecotown is covered on local BBC News
  • Many small events take place, including a wild food walk, and interactive stalls at several public events

2007

  • Transition Leicester promotes showings of the Peak Oil documentary “A Crude Awakening” at the Phoenix cinema
  • A response is submitted to the City Council’s consultation on Big Ideas for Leicester’s future
